WENASHE FARMS

Revolutionising Food Security through Water-Energy Sustainable Agriculture Production Systems

The Problem

The agricultural sector in Zimbabwe and across Africa is facing a looming challenge as demand and cost for electricity for production, processing and value addition is projected to escalate rapidly. Farming businesses in the sector must grapple with a critical question: Can highly efficient production models be achieved without detriment to the environment? This challenge is compounded by the pressing issues of climate change, desertification, food security, food safety, and water shortages in the region. To address these urgent challenges, there is a crucial need to develop a circular economy model-led integrated food production systems. For Wenashe Farms, this system must tackle the scarcity of arable land exacerbated by population and economic growth by optimising resource utilisation. The solution must prioritise sustainable and resilient practices to produce high-quality, year-round food while meeting the escalating demand for food and energy and minimising environmental impact.

The Opportunity

The opportunity lies in aggregating local farmers, sharing information and infrastructure to capitalise on the growing demand regionally, for locally harvested, ultra-fresh, organic, and healthy food amid shifting consumer preferences. This presents lucrative markets for innovative farming and harvesting concepts that prioritise sustainability and environmental stewardship. By leveraging technologies like Hydroponics and Agrivoltaics (AgriPV), which enables dual-purpose land use for food and renewable energy production for on-site productive-use, there’s immense potential to maximise productivity per unit area while meeting the rising demand for nutritious food. This approach not only addresses food security concerns but also contributes to the conservation of land resources and mitigates environmental impact, aligning with global aims for sustainable agriculture and energy production.

Our Vision

At Wenashe Farms, our vision is to revolutionise food security in Zimbabwe by demonstrating that water-energy efficient systems for agricultural production can be location-independent. We aim to address food security through combined synergy production of meat protein & greens. Wenashe Farms seeks to collaborate with other outgrower small farmer collectives to build and operate community-anchoring, climate-smart farms on various commercial scales by using and sharing natural resources and production infrastructure wisely.
